# Fees and taxes

Overview of our pricing and potential local taxes

Our approach to fees is simple. We believe in:

- Radical transparency: We’ll always be upfront with any associated charges. We also want to ensure that we charge the smallest amount possible fairly, so if you place an order where the fees will account for 5% or more of its total value, you’ll be presented with a pop-up in the Lightyear app for you to confirm this
- Honest pricing: Our fees are a combination of covering the costs associated with the service plus a small amount on top that we can reinvest to improve the business

**Stamp duty**

Stamp duty is the tax governments place on legal documents, usually in the transfer of assets or property.

These taxes apply to anyone who is trading the applicable asset, irrespective of if you are a tax resident of that jurisdiction or not.

### Regulatory fees (applicable only for U.S. securities)

- **American Depositary Receipts (ADRs)**: You may incur an annual custodial fee of $0.01–$0.05 per share. Additional small charges of $0.02–$0.05 per share or event during corporate actions (like dividends or mergers). These fees are set by the ADR depositary and custodian banks, not Lightyear, and vary by asset. You can check with the specific depositary bank to confirm the exact fee per ADR. Read more about ADRs [here](/help/trading-and-investments/american-depositary-receipts).

When you sell U.S. securities, small regulatory fees may apply. These fees only apply to sell trades, and are usually just a few cents.

- **FINRA TAF (Trading Activity Fee)** based on the number of shares sold.
- **Regulatory Transaction Fee** applies to sales of U.S.-listed stocks or options.
