Coming this Friday: crypto in Hungary

Last week, the Hungarian parliament approved a new law that clears the way for Lightyear to bring crypto to Hungarian customers. Now, we’re just a few days away from it entering into force.
Coming this Friday: crypto in Hungary

It’s been a long time coming

When we launched crypto across the EU in May, Hungary was the only country we had to leave out, as a validation requirement unique to Hungary made offering crypto here legally impossible.

Launching crypto here is an important milestone for us, as a recent customer survey revealed that over 80% of you, our Hungarian customers, consider crypto as your most anticipated new asset class on Lightyear.

Now, local regulation has been approved to change and the validation regime will officially be repealed on Friday. That’s also when our crypto offering will launch.

Countdown to launch: Crypto is live on Lightyear

To go into a bit more detail: the previous validation requirement, unique among EU member states, made it extremely complicated to offer crypto legally. Every transaction required a compliance certificate from a licensed intermediary, without which both providers and customers faced criminal liability. Last week’s parliament decision removed that obstacle.
