IGI remained profitable across all three segments despite one of its largest loss events. First-half underwriting income rose 6.7% to $67.2 million and the combined ratio was 92.2%, showing that its diversified book absorbed exceptional claims. (IGI, Insurance Business)
The India expansion is already adding volume. New business after the GIFT City registration contributed about $10 million of premium, while second-quarter reinsurance gross written premium rose 52% year on year. (The Motley Fool, Bermuda Re)
IGI continued returning capital while maintaining financial strength. It returned about $72.9 million in the first half through dividends and buybacks, including a $1.15 special dividend, and held A-level stable ratings from AM Best and S&P Global Ratings. (IGI, Insurance Business)
Exceptional claims are already depressing reported earnings. Second-quarter net income fell 39% year on year to $20.9 million, while first-half profit fell 31% to $42.5 million after Middle East war losses and a large non-catastrophe energy loss. (IGI, Bermuda Re)
The headline combined ratio flatters current underwriting performance. Before catastrophe losses, the first-half accident-year combined ratio worsened to 105.2% from 101.0%, while $30.6 million of favourable prior-year reserve development helped support the reported 92.2% ratio. (Insurance Business, IGI)
Pricing conditions are becoming less supportive. Management said the market is softening and prices have declined rapidly in some lines, which could make it harder for IGI to grow premiums without sacrificing underwriting margins. (The Motley Fool, IGI)
