About PRA Group

PRA Group Inc is a specialty finance company engaged in the purchase, collection, and management of nonperforming loan portfolios. The majority of the loans it purchases are from credit originators who have chosen not to pursue, or have been unsuccessful in collecting, the full balance owed to them (Core accounts). To a lesser extent, the company also purchases loans in situations where the customer is involved in a bankruptcy or similar proceeding (Insolvency accounts). As part of an ancillary business, it also purchases and provides fee-based services for class action claims recoveries in the U.S. The company has two operating and reportable segments, comprised of its U.S. and European businesses. The majority of its revenue is generated from the United States.

What the Analysts think about PRA Group

Bulls say / Bears say

Collections rose 4% in Q2 and 7.4% in the first half, while portfolio income grew 9.2% year to date. PRA also reported a 61% cash efficiency ratio, suggesting operating improvements are converting collections into stronger cash generation. (SEC)
European portfolios have outperformed collection forecasts for more than six years, prompting a $349 million increase in estimated remaining collections. Management expects this to add about $25 million of annual portfolio income in the near term, a more predictable revenue source. (The Motley Fool)
PRA has a record $8.9 billion of estimated remaining collections and says loan supply is healthy in both the US and Europe. A new share repurchase authorisation of up to $150 million gives it another route to return capital while it invests selectively. (The Motley Fool, SEC)
Q2 portfolio revenue rose 28%, but cash collections grew only 4%; the revenue jump relied heavily on revised future recovery estimates, including the European portfolio reassessment. If those higher forecasts do not turn into cash, earnings could prove less durable. (SEC, TradingKey)
Legal collection costs rose by $15 million in Q2 to $52.5 million as PRA expanded that channel. Higher spending may weigh on margins if the resulting collections do not keep pace. (SEC)
Borrowings stood at about $3.76 billion at the end of June, and PRA subsequently issued $400 million of notes carrying an 8.5% coupon to repay revolving debt. That refinancing may extend maturities, but the high coupon leaves the business exposed to a substantial financing burden. (SEC, MarketScreener)
