Bulls say / Bears say

Teekay’s strong spot exposure produced record adjusted net income of $193.6 million in Q2, while Suezmax and Aframax/LR2 spot rates averaged $109,200 and $74,100 per day. Q3 rates booked to date were still robust, although only 44% of spot days had been fixed. (SEC)
A $1.3 billion liquidity position and a low cash-flow break-even give Teekay room to withstand weaker markets and fund fleet renewal. The company had two modern Suezmax newbuildings due in 2027 and had brought three recently acquired Aframaxes into spot trading. (SEC)
Teekay’s September market update reported record-high spot rates amid longer voyages and disrupted trade flows, and said these inefficiencies should support rates into Q4. Continued disruption and strong Asian demand for long-haul crude could therefore sustain near-term earnings. (Teekay)
The exceptional freight market may fade as trade routes normalise: Teekay said rates began correcting as flows adjusted, with Aframax rates falling faster as newbuildings arrived and LR2 ships shifted into dirty trades. That makes earnings highly sensitive to geopolitical developments. (SEC)
A growing tanker fleet could put pressure on freight rates. S&P Global reports a forecast 22.6% increase in global tanker capacity from 2025 to 2029, and warns that easing disruptions or the return of restricted ships could add effective supply faster than expected. (S&P Global)
Dry-docking and weaker booked Aframax rates could weigh on near-term earnings: a recent report cites about 260 Q3 off-hire days and an average booked Aframax/LR2 rate of $59,900 per day, below Q2’s $74,100. Analysts expected a sharp sequential earnings decline from the Q2 peak. (Finviz)
