About Ally Financial

Formerly the captive financial arm of General Motors, Ally Financial became an independent publicly traded firm in 2014 and is one of the largest consumer auto lenders in the country. While the firm has expanded its product offerings over time, it remains primarily focused on auto lending, with more than 70% of its loan book in consumer auto loans and dealer financing. Ally also offers auto insurance, commercial loans, credit cards, and holds a portfolio of mortgage debt, giving the bank a diversified business model that includes brokerage services.

What the Analysts think about Ally Financial

Bulls say / Bears say

Third-quarter adjusted earnings per share rose 16% year on year as revenue grew 9% and expenses stayed flat. That points to improving operating leverage rather than growth being absorbed by higher costs. (The Motley Fool)
Ally has a growing pipeline: auto applications reached a record 4.8 million, up 20%, while auto originations rose 10% and Corporate Finance loans grew 40%. Management raised its full-year earning-asset growth outlook to 5%–6%, which could support future revenue. (The Motley Fool)
Ally’s net interest margin excluding core OID reached 3.66% in the quarter, and management expects about 3.7% in the fourth quarter. Lower deposit costs and a shift towards higher-return auto and corporate loans could help sustain margin improvement. (The Motley Fool)
Credit indicators are turning less favourable: auto delinquencies rose year on year and management flagged higher early delinquencies in late-2025 and early-2026 loan vintages. Retail auto charge-offs also increased 32 basis points sequentially to 1.89%. (American Banker)
Pressure on Stellantis vehicle auction values caused a $16 million loss on lease terminations in the third quarter. Ally expects this residual-value headwind to continue into the fourth quarter, clouding near-term earnings. (The Motley Fool)
Higher interest rates could keep funding costs elevated: Ally competes for deposits with high-yield savings products, and analysts have warned that rate increases can pressure its margin. Morgan Stanley also cut its outlook, saying higher rates could limit earnings and return growth. (Banking Dive, Yahoo Finance)
