Bulls say / Bears say

Rising Japanese interest rates and solid loan demand are lifting MUFG’s core lending returns: first-quarter net interest income rose 28% and net profit rose 48%, beating analysts’ expectations. MUFG maintained its ¥2.7 trillion full-year profit target. (The Japan Times, MUFG)
Growth is not limited to lending: first-quarter net fees and commissions increased 21%, while trading profits and earnings from equity-method investments also rose. MUFG said all business units performed, with global markets and corporate and investment banking among the strongest contributors. (MUFG, The Japan Times)
Shareholder distributions are increasing: MUFG raised its annual dividend to ¥86 for the year ended March 2026, from ¥64 the year before, and forecasts ¥96 for the current year. Its stated dividend policy targets a payout ratio of about 40%. (MUFG, Business Wire)
Credit costs are rising alongside earnings: first-quarter total credit costs increased to ¥72.1 billion from ¥46.9 billion a year earlier. Further borrower stress could weaken the benefit from wider lending spreads. (MarketWatch)
Higher rates can also hurt the value of bonds and pressure capital, offsetting some of the benefit to lending margins. MUFG identifies rising unrealised losses on debt securities as a key risk, while Reuters reported it trimmed foreign-bond holdings amid concerns about renewed US inflation and higher rates. (MUFG, Reuters)
MUFG’s Morgan Stanley stake adds exposure to another firm’s earnings that it cannot control. MUFG’s filing says Morgan Stanley has contributed significantly to its recent net income and revenue, and a deterioration in Morgan Stanley’s performance or a breakdown in the alliance could hurt MUFG.
