Bulls say / Bears say

Unum US continues to deliver steady core execution: Q2 2026 adjusted operating income rose 3.6% to $329.6 million, premium income increased 3.3%, and sales grew 7.4%; Colonial Life also posted 11.9% operating-income growth with a 6.0% sales increase. (Unum Q2 2026 results)
The $3.8 billion LTC reinsurance transaction reduces legacy risk: combined with the 2025 transaction, Unum expects to reduce total LTC statutory reserves by approximately 40% and reinsure more than $7 billion of LTC statutory reserves, sharpening its focus on the core employee-benefits franchise. (LTC reinsurance announcement)
Capital returns remain attractive and well supported: Unum raised its quarterly dividend approximately 10% to $0.505 per share, repurchased $202.1 million of stock in Q2 2026, and reported approximately 480% risk-based capital with $1.54 billion of holding-company liquidity at June 30. (Dividend increase; Unum Q2 2026 results)
Group disability remains a key pressure point: Q2 2026 adjusted operating income fell 17.4% year over year to $103.1 million, while the benefit ratio rose to 65.8% from 62.2% because of higher short-term disability incidence, particularly in paid family and medical leave. (Unum Q2 2026 results)
Unum International showed deteriorating momentum despite premium growth: Q2 2026 adjusted operating income declined 41.6% to $24.3 million, sales fell 19.4%, and investment income decreased 8.7%. (Unum Q2 2026 results)
The Closed Block remains a material earnings drag: its Q2 2026 adjusted operating loss widened to $75.4 million from $10.8 million, driven by lower investment income and amortization of reinsurance costs; the new LTC transaction will also cause foregone investment income and incremental financing expense.
