About ING Group
The merger of the Dutch postal bank and NN Insurance in 1991 created ING. Through a series of further acquisitions, ING has built up a global footprint. The financial crisis in 2008 forced ING to seek government support—a precondition of which was that ING should separate its banking and insurance activities, which saw ING revert to being solely a bank. ING has market-leading banking operations in the Netherlands and Belgium, and a range of digital banks across Europe and Australia. Its global wholesale banking operation is primarily focused on lending.

Bulls say / Bears say
ING’s commercial engine is still growing: third-quarter income rose 5.6% year on year, supported by lending and deposit growth, while fee income increased 9.3%. Net profit rose 3.5% and the bank added 259,000 mobile primary customers. (ING Group)
Capital returns are substantial, with ING announcing up to €1.9 billion for shareholders, including a €1.65 billion buyback and a €250 million cash payment. Its 13.3% CET1 ratio remains above the bank’s roughly 13% target and regulatory minimum. (ING Group)
ING raised its 2026 and 2027 outlook in July, targeting return on tangible equity above 15% and 16%, respectively, alongside higher income expectations. If delivered, this would support continued earnings growth beyond the current year. (SEC)
Third-quarter net profit missed analysts’ expectations: loan-loss charges were €403 million, above the €343 million consensus, and costs were also higher than expected. Further increases in credit losses could undermine earnings. (Reuters)
ING Australia had overstated its liquidity position for several years, prompting its regulator to impose tighter conditions and an additional A$50 million operational-risk capital requirement. The episode raises questions about controls and could require costly remediation. (Bloomberg)
Higher taxes are eating into profit growth: in the first half, ING’s tax expense rose 26% while profit before tax increased 15%, with a higher Polish bank tax contributing to the increase. This could limit how much of operating progress reaches shareholders. (SEC)
