What is an IPO and how does it work?
An IPO (initial public offering) is when a private company first sells shares that anyone can buy on a stock exchange. It happens in four steps:
- Filing to go public. Anthropic did this on 26 October 2026.
- Price range announced. This is a rough guide to what price the shares will be offered at.
- Final price set. This usually happens the night before trading starts.
- First day of trading. This is when you can buy the stock on public markets.
