It’s important to know that the price data displayed on instrument pages is indicative only and actual execution price may vary. Remember that markets may go up or down, so you should never invest more than you can afford to lose. This article explains how we display instrument prices in the app, for information on our trading fees, see Fees and taxes.
Last known price
The price you see at the top of an instrument page is the last known trading price received from our data providers. Depending on agreements with our partners, some of these prices in Lightyear are live, whilst others are delayed. If delayed, this is indicated next to the shown price on the instrument page and in the order preview.
- Live pricing – US, UK, EU (excl. Baltic) exchanges
- 15 mins delayed – Baltic exchanges
Does live price guarantee my market order price?
The live price you see is the most recent trading price for this instrument, but this might not be the exact price your order will be filled at. When you place a market order, you're agreeing to buy or sell at the current market price, which may fluctuate very quickly when the market is open depending on trading volumes at any given moment.
If determining the maximum buy price or minimum sell price is important for you, you may want to consider a limit order. See Market and Limit orders and seek further guidance if unsure which order type fits your investment strategy the best.
Market buy order pricing before confirming an order
When placing a market buy order for an amount of shares, you’ll see a reserved cash amount that is inclusive of an additional 5% buffer. We use this buffer to cover possible price fluctuations and give your order the best chance of filling when the market opens, and any funds not used will be added back to your account balance after the order is filled.
Charts
Line chart
- Line charts on Lightyear platform display period closing prices which you can view by clicking(web) or pressing(app) and then dragging along the chart. This means you can track the last price at which the stock was trading during a given period.
- For example, on the day line chart we show the closing prices in 5-minute intervals – the price can go up or down during this time but the price you see on the graph represents the last price, or closing price, only. When not dragging on the chart, the two prices you see on the graph are the highest and lowest close prices of all 5-minute intervals, not the overall highest or lowest trading prices of the day.
Candlesticks
We offer line charts for all instruments, but for US stocks you can switch to candlesticks in the chart settings. Candles can help get a more thorough understanding of the price movements within a given period. They show four types of prices for each period which you can view by dragging on the chart:
- Open: the first price at which a stock trades
- Close: the last price at which the stock trades
- High: the highest price reached
- Low: the lowest price reached
Buy and sell information
You can enable the buy and sell details in the chart settings. This gives you the option to track your past orders and their prices on the line chart.
Pre-market and after hours data
- Lightyear does not support pre-market or afterhours trading at this time and while you can place pending orders outside of market hours, they can only fill during open market hours
- However, for US stocks, we display the pre-market and after hours price data to give you insights into market conditions and possible price movements
- Your estimated profit and loss is not updated with pre-market or after hours data, which means your PnL estimation is calculated based on the global closing prices
- It’s important to remember that the prices at market open can be volatile
