If a loved one who had a Lightyear account has passed away, you are the executor of someone’s estate, or if you're looking to prepare your own account for the future, this page will walk you through what to do.
We understand it’s a difficult time and will handle the process as quickly as we can and with as little burden on you as possible. We're here for you every step of the way, so if there’s anything we can do to make things easier, please let us know.
Managing someone else’s account
To notify us of a Lightyear account owner's death, please email support@lightyear.com. If you have an account with us and are logged in, you can also use the in-app contact button shown below this article.
Not sure if they had a Lightyear account? Just reach out to us with their full name and contact details (email or phone number), and we’ll check for you and explain what the next steps are.
When you know the account exists, please provide the information listed below. We will generally ask for confirmation documents for legal claims to assets and some other verifications that are needed. You can send these via email, or if you have a Lightyear account, we can provide a secure option to upload them directly through the app.
- A copy of the death certificate.
- If you know this, the email address or phone number associated with the Lightyear account.
- A proof that you have a legal claim or right to manage the estate. This can be a signed Will, Grant of Probate, or a Letter of Administration.
- A photo of you with your valid ID (this is so we can verify you. If you have an account with us, you can skip this step and we'll send an in-app request to confirm your identity).
Please note:
- Our accounts are intended for personal use only and we can’t change the account holder.
- Depending on the circumstances, we may require additional documents to verify the parties involved and any recipient bank accounts.
Managing my own account
We understand that thinking about end-of-life matters isn’t easy, but planning ahead can help bring peace of mind:
- Lightyear accounts are individual and not held jointly, which means your account cannot be kept by someone else.
- Any assets you own will usually become part of your estate and we’ll follow the instructions of your executor or legal representative who contacts us.
